Where yards are still used
- American football: the field is 100 yards between the goal lines (91.44 m), and progress is counted in yards.
- Golf: hole lengths and club distances in the US and UK are in yards; a 400-yard hole is 366 m. Many courses elsewhere measure in meters.
- Swimming: US high school and college pools are often 25 yards (22.86 m) instead of 25 m, which is why yard times are faster and not comparable with meter times.
- Fabric and yarn: sold by the yard in the US; a yard of fabric is 91.44 cm, a little shorter than the meter sold in most other countries – buy 10% more when a pattern gives meters and the shop sells yards.
- UK road signs: short distances to a junction or an exit are in yards (“200 yds”).
The international yard
Until 1959 the US and the UK had slightly different yards, each defined by its own standard. The international yard and pound agreement fixed the yard at 0.9144 m exactly, which also fixed the foot (0.3048 m) and the inch (25.4 mm).
For miles and kilometers, see miles to km; for feet, feet to meters. On a golf course or in a fabric shop with no signal, the converter still works once zet4u is saved on your phone (how it works offline).
Frequently asked questions
How many meters are in a yard?
0.9144 exactly, by the international agreement of 1959. So 10 yards = 9.144 m and 100 yards = 91.44 m. Quick estimate: a yard is a meter minus about 9%.
