Altitude and aviation

Aircraft altitude is given in feet almost everywhere in the world, even in metric countries. A typical cruising altitude of 35,000 ft is 10,668 m, or about 10.7 km. Mount Everest’s 8,849 m are about 29,032 ft.

The foot around the world

The international foot has been 0.3048 m since 1959. Until the end of 2022 the United States also used a slightly longer “US survey foot” (1200/3937 m) for land surveying; the difference is only 2 parts per million, about 3 mm in a mile. Japan’s traditional shaku, still printed on some lumber, is 30.3 cm: close to a foot, but a different unit, and the converter lists it separately.
