Where acres and hectares are used

Acres are used for land in the United States, the United Kingdom (alongside hectares), Canada and parts of South Asia, among others. Most of the world uses hectares for land and m² for plots and homes. In land listings, a price per acre converts to a price per hectare by multiplying by 2.471.

The old definition

In medieval England an acre was the land a team of oxen could plow in a day: a strip one furlong (220 yards) long and one chain (22 yards) wide – 4,840 square yards. The international yard of 1959 fixed the yard at 0.9144 m, which makes the acre exactly 4,046.8564224 m² today.

Frequently asked questions

How many square meters are in an acre?

4,046.8564224 exactly – an acre is defined as 4,840 square yards, and a yard is exactly 0.9144 m. Rounded, 4,047 m²; roughly 4,000 m² for a quick estimate.

How many acres are in a hectare?

2.471. A hectare is 10,000 m² (100 × 100 m), so it is about two and a half acres; an acre is 0.405 hectares.

How many square feet are in an acre?

43,560. A square acre would be about 208.7 ft (63.6 m) on each side. The acre was never meant to be square: its old form was a strip one furlong (660 ft) long and one chain (66 ft) wide.

Is the US survey acre different?

Slightly. It was based on the US survey foot, 2 parts per million longer than the international foot, so a survey acre was about 4,046.873 m² – 0.0004% more. The US retired the survey foot at the end of 2022; old deeds and maps may still use it, but the difference only matters for very large surveys.
