Most building materials are sold by the piece, but jobs are measured in meters or square feet. 45 m of trim in 2.4 m lengths is 45 ÷ 2.4 = 18.75 pieces; with 10% extra for cuts, buy 21. Choose whether you are covering a length (trim, pipe, cable, fence rails) or an area (sheets, panels, boards), type the size of one piece and the calculator rounds up to whole pieces – or whole packs – and adds up the cost.
45 m of trim: pieces by length and waste
| Piece length | No extra | +5% | +10% | +15% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2.4 m (about 8 ft) | 19 | 20 | 21 | 22 |
| 3 m (about 10 ft) | 15 | 16 | 17 | 18 |
| 4.2 m (about 14 ft) | 11 | 12 | 12 | 13 |
Longer pieces mean fewer joints and, often, less waste, because the offcuts are longer and can be used elsewhere.
Length or area?
- Length: for anything that runs along a wall or a line – baseboard, crown molding, edging, gutters, cable, pipe. The total is the run, and one piece covers its own length.
- Area: for anything that covers a surface – plywood or drywall sheets, insulation boards, wall panels, roofing sheets. One piece covers its length × its width.
An area count assumes offcuts can be reused. If every row must start with a full piece, or the surface is broken by many windows, count the rows and columns instead, or raise the extra.
Plan wall by wall
Offcuts shorter than the next gap are waste, so the most accurate count is per wall: a 3.1 m wall needs two 2.4 m pieces whatever the total says. Use the calculator for the overall order, then check the longest walls on their own. Buy from one batch so the color and profile match.
The calculator runs on your phone and works offline once the site is saved, even in a store basement with no signal.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out how many pieces I need?
Divide the total by what one piece covers, add the waste and round up. 45 m of trim with 2.4 m pieces is 18.75 pieces; with 10% for cuts, 20.6, so buy 21.
How much extra should I add for waste?
For straight runs, 5–10% is usual; for many corners, angled cuts or a pattern that must line up, 15% or more. The calculator shows how many of the pieces are extra.
How many 4 × 8 ft sheets do I need for 320 ft²?
Each sheet covers 32 ft², so 10 sheets without waste and 11 with 10% extra.
What if the pieces come in packs?
Enter how many pieces are in a pack: the calculator rounds up to whole packs and tells you how many spare pieces you will have.
Can I mix units?
Yes. The total can be in meters, feet or yards and the piece in centimeters, millimeters, inches or feet: everything is converted before dividing.
