Your step is estimated from your height (about 41% of it). Running steps are much longer: measure them separately.

Calculated on your device. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

A step counter counts steps, not distance. To turn steps into miles or kilometers you need the length of each step, which depends mostly on your height. The calculator estimates it the way pedometer makers do – about 41% of your height – or uses the step length you measured, which is always better.

Example: you are 5 ft 9 in (175 cm) and your phone shows 10,000 steps. Your estimated step is 28.5 in (72 cm), so you walked 4.5 miles (7.2 km) – about 1 hour 30 minutes at 3 mph.

165 cm 68 cm about 1,465 6.8 km

Why your real distance may differ

  • Pace: fast walking lengthens the step; strolling in a shop shortens it.
  • Ground: hills, stairs, sand and crowds all shorten steps.
  • Running: a running step is much longer than a walking one. If you mix walking and running, measure both and work them out separately.
  • The counter: phones and watches miss steps when you push a stroller or hold a rail, and count some when you bounce on a bus. GPS distance is more accurate outdoors.

Steps, distance and time

At an easy 3 mph (4.8 km/h) a mile takes 20 minutes, so 10,000 steps is about an hour and a half of walking for most people – but you do not need to do them in one go: steps through the day add up. For the energy, the calories burned calculator takes the minutes of walking; for running, the running pace calculator gives pace and splits.

Frequently asked questions

How many miles is 10,000 steps?

About 4 to 5 miles (6.4 to 7.7 km), depending on your height. For someone 5 ft 6 in tall it is about 4.3 miles (6.9 km); at 6 ft, about 4.7 miles (7.6 km).

How many steps are in a mile?

Roughly 2,000 to 2,500 walking steps. A person 5 ft 3 in tall takes about 2,430 steps per mile; a person 6 ft 3 in, about 2,040. Running steps are longer, so a mile run takes noticeably fewer: count them once on a track to know yours.

How do I measure my step length?

Mark a starting point, walk 10 normal steps, and measure the distance from the start to the toe of your last step; divide by 10. Or walk a known distance, such as a 400 m track lap, and divide it by the steps you count. Enter it in the calculator to replace the estimate.

Where does 10,000 steps a day come from?

From a Japanese pedometer sold in the 1960s, whose name meant "10,000-step meter". Later studies support the idea that more steps are better: in a 2022 analysis of over 47,000 adults in The Lancet Public Health, the risk of dying fell as daily steps rose, leveling off around 6,000–8,000 steps for people over 60 and 8,000–10,000 for younger adults.
