What is Fahrenheit in Celsius?

Convert °F to °C (and kelvin) with the formula shown. Oven temperatures with gas marks, body temperature and weather tables included.

350 degrees Fahrenheit =

176.67 degrees Celsius

kelvins
449.82

For a temperature difference (how much warmer it got), do not add or subtract 32: a rise of 10 °F is a rise of 5.56 °C.

  1. (350 − 32) ÷ 1.8 = 176.67 °C

Calculated on your device. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

To turn Fahrenheit into Celsius, subtract 32 and divide by 1.8. 350 °F is 176.7 °C, which recipes round to 180 °C. The calculator above shows the formula with your numbers and gives kelvin as well; choose “degrees Celsius” in the list to convert the other way.

Oven temperatures

°F °C (exact) °C in recipes UK gas mark
250 121 120 ½
275 135 140 1
300 149 150 2
325 163 160–170 3

400 204 200 6
425 218 220 7
450 232 230 8
475 246 240 9

For a fan (convection) oven, take about 20 °C (25 °F) off the conventional temperature.

°F °C What it usually means
96.8 36.0 Low end of normal
97.7 36.5 Normal
98.6 37.0 Normal
99.5 37.5 Normal to slightly raised
100.4 38.0 Fever

102.2 39.0 High fever
104.0 40.0 Very high fever: seek medical advice

Thermometers differ by where they measure (mouth, ear, forehead, armpit), so compare readings from the same method.

68 20 Room temperature

A quick estimate in your head

Subtract 30 and halve: 70 °F → 40 → 20 °C (exactly 21.1). The trick is perfect at 50 °F and drifts by a few degrees as you move away from it:

°F Exact °C (°F − 30) ÷ 2
0 −17.8 −15
32 0 1
50 10 10
70 21.1 20
90 32.2 30
100 37.8 35

Good enough for the weather, not for baking or a fever.

Differences are not temperatures

A rise of 10 °F is a rise of 5.6 °C – you divide by 1.8 but do not subtract 32, because the offset cancels out. A forecast that says “15 degrees warmer than yesterday” in Fahrenheit means 8.3 degrees warmer in Celsius.

Kelvin

Scientists use kelvin, which starts at absolute zero (−273.15 °C, −459.67 °F). To convert, add 273.15 to Celsius: 20 °C is 293.15 K. Nothing can be colder than 0 K, so the calculator refuses temperatures below it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Subtract 32, then divide by 1.8. For example, 350 °F: 350 − 32 = 318, and 318 ÷ 1.8 = 176.7 °C.

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply by 1.8, then add 32. 20 °C × 1.8 = 36, plus 32 = 68 °F.

Where are Fahrenheit and Celsius the same?

At −40. Minus forty degrees Fahrenheit is exactly minus forty degrees Celsius.

What is a fever in Fahrenheit?

Most doctors count 100.4 °F (38 °C) or higher as a fever in adults. A normal body temperature is around 98.6 °F (37 °C), give or take a degree.

What is 180 °C in a fan oven?

Fan (convection) ovens cook hotter, so recipes usually lower the temperature by about 20 °C: 180 °C conventional is about 160 °C fan.
